對於形容詞few和little，以及它們的比較式fewer和less的用法，文法書都會指出，few用來形容可數名詞（countable nouns），little則形容不可數名詞（uncountable nouns）。例如：There were fewer rainy days last year than normal，但There was less rain last year than normal，因為days可數，rain不可數。

但請看以下這句子：With less than 100 days left before the opening of the Shanghai World Expo, preparations are now in the final stages，為什麼要說less than 100 days而不是fewer than 100 days呢？原來這裏說的是（距離上海世博開幕的）時間長度，而時間長度是「不可數」的，雖然用來量度時間的days（日）可以數。

這道理也適用於其他度量衡單位，例如less than 10 kilogrammes、less than 400 dollars、less than 50 miles等。試比較上一段提及的fewer rainy days，說的是（去年的）降雨日數較少，真的要點算日數，所以要用fewer而不用less。去年的下雨天少於100天，應說There were fewer（不是less）than 100 rainy days last year。

不過，不是所有「慣用」說法都有嚴格的文法規則可依。例如我們說「距離世博開幕還有不到100天」，就是There are less than 100 days before the opening of the World Expo。如果把「不到100天」改為「日數不多」，就要說There are not many days before the opening of the World Expo；眾數式名詞days之前一定要用many而不能用much；事實上，「日數很少」也要說There are very few days，不能說very little days！那麼為什麼There are less than 100 days（less是little的比較式）又可以是正確的呢？

有作者更指出，既然fewer解作a smaller number of（一個較小的數目），fewer後面的名詞便應是眾數式的。那麼試想想：「他們的政黨贏得比上次選舉少三個議席」，可說Their party won three fewer seats than in the previous election；但如果是比上次少一席呢？不能說one fewer seats，因為one後面的名詞不能是眾數，但one fewer seat也不對，因為fewer後面的名詞應是眾數！所以有的專家建議，統統不要說one fewer，而說one less。大概是這個緣故，張藝謀獲得多個國際獎項的電影《一個都不能少》，英文譯名是Not One Less，不是Not One Fewer。
