Escalating anti-governmentdemonstrations in Syria have put the Obamaadministration in a quandary as it tries to protect arange of wider US interests while supporting what ithas called the legitimate aspirations of the Syrianpeople.

The wideningdefiance in Syria comes after months of challenge tothe autocrats of the Arab world that confronts themwith a stark choice: either they can step down, as theleaders of Tunisia and Egypt were forced to do, or theycan protect their own power with varying degrees offorce, like the rulers of Libya, Bahrain and Yemen, atthe risk of ever greater violence. In Syria, the quandaryseems particularly acute, with the authorities veeringbetween offers of concessions and crackdowns.
